Shopping for an endurance horse presents a unique challenge. On the one hand, you aren’t locked into any breed or type, since all equines are permitted in the sport. On the other hand, you need a horse whose conformation, mind, and history lend themselves to soundness and sanity over thousands of trail miles.

If you have the resources, you may tap into one of the extraordinary breeding programs that has focused on endurance prospects over many decades. You could also check out horses started by prominent endurance riding professionals.

However, if you’re looking for a more modest price point, here are some good places to hunt for your diamond in the rough:

Online Classifieds with Endurance Horses for Sale

Online classified ad platforms like Dream Horse and EquineNow are conveniently searchable by factors such as location, breed, age, and training level. Craigslist is less searchable, but it’s possible to find good horses there if you’re willing to scan frequently.

If you’re up for taking a chance, you can often catch a deal on a nice horse that has been left unstarted or poorly started because the seller realized they’re in over their head. Classifieds also have the advantage of (usually) telling you the asking price up front.

On the downside, sellers using the free versions of these services may not include photos. Many are unfamiliar with endurance riding — or horses generally — and decide to market an “endurance prospect” based strictly on breed or even challenging behavior.

Still, it’s worth a look. With patience, savvy, and a little luck, you might find your next endurance horse in the classifieds.

Social Media Groups with Endurance Horses for Sale

Although animal sales typically aren’t permitted on social media platforms, plenty of groups have found ways to let people exchange information about available endurance horses and prospects.

Posts in these groups tend to feature photos and sometimes video, but it’s common for sellers to leave out critical information such as age or location. Additionally, sellers are not permitted to post prices, so you may have to send a private message to determine whether a prospect is in your range.

That said, if you’re looking for a constant stream of possibilities, here are some groups to consider:

Endurance Horses/Ponies Prospects to Proven – This Facebook group has about 6,000 members with about 40 posts per month, all focused on available endurance prospects.

Endurance Horses PROVEN ONLY-breed-REHOME – This Facebook group has about 4,000 members and 10 posts per month. Horses posted here must have some endurance experience.

Endurance Sport Horse – This Facebook group has about 2,200 members and 80 posts per month on a range of endurance topics including available tack and horses.

Arabian and Half Arabian Marketing Connections – This Facebook group has about 21,500 members and 115 posts per month. Although it is not endurance-specific, the focus on Arabians and Half Arabians narrows the field appropriately.

Arabian Horses for/in Sport (Riding/Endurance/Racing) and Sport Breeding – This Facebook group has about 2500 members and 15 posts per month, including sales and information about Arabian sport horses.

Arabian and Half/Anglo Arabian Sport Horses – This Facebook group has about 4,000 members and 125 posts/month, primarily focused on available horses.

Mustang Endurance Horse – This Facebook group has about 7500 members and 50 posts per month. Available horse posts are frequent, in addition to general discussion about mustangs in endurance.

If you’re looking for a specific breed (Appaloosas, Morgans, NSHs, Saddlebreds, and many others have done well in endurance, try searching Facebook for “[breed]  endurance horse” or “[breed] horse sales” and you’ll almost certainly find a relevant group.

Get a Little Help from Your Friends

Sometimes, the best horses sell before they’re posted anywhere. Ask your endurance friends if they’ve heard of available prospects.

If you’re up for a project, grab someone with a good eye to join you on a road trip to the nearest BLM adoption.
